The Rosario Islands are a chain of small coral islands off the coast southwest of Cartagena. The reefs around them are among the richest in the Colombian Caribbean.
Colombia protected the reefs as a national park in 1977. In 1996 the park was extended south to the San Bernardo islands, and it now covers about 1,200 square kilometres, almost all of it sea.
Isla Grande, the largest island, is home to Orika, an Afro-Colombian village of around 300 families who have lived and fished here for generations.
